Every Colorado dispensary I’ve been to scans my ID before letting me into the sales area.
The main reason is age verification.
Colorado dispensaries have to make sure recreational customers are at least 21 before selling them weed.
But Colorado law requires them to check your ID.
It doesn’t specifically say every dispensary has to electronically scan it.
Why Do Colorado Dispensaries Scan Your ID?
Dispensaries need to make sure you’re old enough to buy recreational cannabis.
In Colorado, that means you have to be at least 21.
The state requires recreational customers to show acceptable identification before a dispensary can complete the sale.
A lot of dispensaries use electronic scanners to help with that.
Colorado’s marijuana rules specifically mention electronic scanners, ID-checking software and other tools that can be used when inspecting identification.
That helps employees verify an ID and can make it easier to catch one that looks fake or altered.
Does Colorado Law Require Dispensaries to Scan Your ID?
No.
Colorado requires dispensaries to check your identification and make sure you’re at least 21.
But the law does not say every dispensary has to electronically scan every customer’s ID.
An electronic scanner is just one way they can check it.
The ID check is what matters.
What Are They Checking on Your ID?
They’re mainly checking that your ID is valid and proves you’re old enough to buy recreational cannabis.
They also need to make sure the ID actually belongs to you.
If something looks wrong, the dispensary can refuse the sale.
If your ID is expired or invalid, Colorado’s marijuana rules say they have to refuse the transaction.
What IDs Can You Use at a Colorado Dispensary?
Colorado allows several forms of identification for recreational marijuana purchases.
These include:
- A valid driver’s license
- A state-issued identification card
- A U.S. military or other qualifying federal ID
- A passport or passport card
- Certain federally recognized tribal enrollment cards
- Certain valid digital IDs
Your ID has to be valid.
If it’s expired, don’t expect the dispensary to accept it.
Does Scanning Your ID Track How Much Weed You Buy?
Not in the way a lot of people think.
Colorado does have a marijuana inventory tracking system.
That system tracks regulated marijuana as it moves through the legal market.
But that is not the same thing as saying your ID scan creates a statewide customer profile showing every dispensary you visit or everything you buy.
The old version of this article said dispensaries scan your ID so they can tell if you already bought weed somewhere else that day.
I couldn’t verify that in Colorado’s current marijuana rules.
So I wouldn’t tell you that.
Why Do They Check Your ID Again Inside?
This happens to me all the time.
My ID gets scanned when I walk in.
Then the budtender usually looks at it again before I buy anything.
The first check gets you through the front door.
The second check makes sure the person actually buying the cannabis is old enough and has valid identification.
Can You Use an Expired ID at a Colorado Dispensary?
No.
Colorado rules require dispensaries to refuse the sale if your identification is invalid or expired.
So if your driver’s license is expired, bring another accepted form of valid ID.
Why Do They Check My ID If I Obviously Look Over 21?
Because dispensaries don’t want employees guessing someone’s age.
Checking everyone’s ID makes the process a lot more consistent.
I’m well over 21, and they still check mine.
That’s just part of buying weed at a licensed Colorado dispensary.
The Bottom Line
Colorado dispensaries check your ID because they have to verify that recreational customers are at least 21 years old.
A lot of dispensaries use scanners because they make the process faster and help employees inspect IDs.
But checking your ID and electronically scanning it are not exactly the same thing.
Colorado requires the ID check.
It does not specifically require every dispensary to electronically scan your ID.
